Introducing a collection of hand-embroidered cushion covers from Sana`a, Yemen, skilfully crafted by dedicated women supported by YENOF.

Yemen Noor Foundation for Education and Relief (YENOF), is a non-governmental organisation established in April 2003. Initially dedicated to ensuring access to education for underprivileged children, the organisation has evolved to address the holistic needs of families.

In 2007, YENOF initiated a parallel program focusing on the self-sufficiency of parents. Mothers were engaged in sewing and embroidery workshops, along with interest-free loans, to augment family income. This strategic approach aimed to enable parents to support their children's education, fostering economic, social, and cultural impacts. Workshops also raise awareness of Yemen's rich embroidery and needlework heritage.

In 2013, Nouria Nagi, founder of YENOF, received the prestigious Order of the British Empire (OBE) from Queen Elizabeth II for her transformative work with Yemeni women and children. This recognition underscores the significant impact of YENOF's initiatives.

In 2019, YENOF's embroidery program garnered acclaim for its cultural importance. Through workshops, the foundation actively preserves and raises awareness of Yemen's rich embroidery and needlework heritage, adding a cultural dimension to its impactful programs.

As of now, YENOF has provided education to over 500 women from extremely low-income families and facilitated the schooling of more than 550 children.

The women behind the cushions:

Khayzaran is a self-taught embroiderer. Together with Nouria Nagi OBE, she founded YENOF's embroidery programme in 2013. She has since led many workshops and taught several women the art of Yemeni hand embroidery. She often creates her own designs and was selected to make pieces inspired by traditional Yemeni embroidered clothing including a work based on a dress in the collection of the British Museum which has been shown in London at Leighton House, 2024, the Fashion Week, February 2025, part of Kazna Asker new collection launch, and the Women’s History Month showcase at the Affordable Art Fair, March 2025.

Fatima learnt hand embroidery from Khayzaran. She joined the initiative from the very start in 2013. Whereas most of the women part of YENOF’s embroidery programme did not go to school, Fatimah is a graduate who studied librarianship and worked in a private school. In the current difficult context in Yemen, she no longer is employed hence YENOF enrolled two of her children in its education programme while Fatimah now helps supplement her husband’s income through her embroidery work. She has four sisters
also part of YENOF’s embroidery programme.

Fairouz  joined YENOF from the start in 2003. She was 19 and divorced with three children. YENOF enrolled her back to school and upon finishing she went on to university where she studied accountancy. She now works at YENOF and is an embroidery trainer during workshop sessions. She has been dedicated to the schooling of her children and grandchildren.

Amna is a housewife with four children. She comes from a very low-income family and like all women part of YENOF understands that schooling is key to help her family out of poverty. Her children are part of YENOF’s education programme and Amana embroiders to supplement the family’s income.

Samira is a housewife who has three children all part of YENOF’s education programme. She joined the embroidery group in 2020 having learned about it from her children’s school friends. Her husband works as a delivery man and the proceeds from her embroidery work help supplement his income.
